Roller Derby Programs
Got what it takes to be a junior roller derby skater? You just might. If you are between the ages of 6-17 and you like to roller skate (or want to learn), then roller derby just may be for you.
YOSA provides young skaters, ages 6-17, the opportunity to participate in a cutting edge, competitive sport. Children do not need to have any background in athletics, just the desire to skate and learn. Athletes develop desirable skills which translate into positive daily life. Important aptitudes including leadership, confidence, teamwork and communication, and an ability to think on the fly are just a few skills our skaters bring home from roller derby
.
Skaters and refs are required to wear quad roller skates, helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads and a mouth guard to participate. Eventually you will want to have your own gear, but we do have some gear and skates you can borrow to get started. You will need to purchase and bring your own mouth guard (heat molded to fit your upper teeth) before you can participate, as we do not loan these out.
YOSA has a philosophy that is designed to instill positive ideals and help kids realize their own potential. We strive to create a safe, fun and positive environment where all children can be athletic, increase their self-confidence, obtain new friendships and be both self-empowered and self-expressive. This is a place where they learn teamwork, good values, discipline, interaction and stewardship through the competitive sport of full contact Flat Track Roller Derby*. Flat Track Roller Derby is quickly gaining popularity and recognition internationally and nationwide. Regardless of your age or your skating level, come enjoy junior roller derby the YOSA way!

Jr Derby Level 1
Whether you’ve been skating for years or have never tried a pair of skates on, we will teach you all the skills you need to be a derby skater or ref. You can expect to learn how to stop properly, fall safely, how to skate in the pack and jam like a pro. Skaters can expect to learn the rules of junior roller derby according to both WFTDA and USARS rules as well. This is one of the few sports where you play offense and defense at the same time so get ready to think on your feet, or rather your skates.

Jr Derby Level 2
After passing the Level 1 skills test, you will be able to start learning the skills that will allow you to play roller derby. If you are 12 or over, this means full contact! (Six to 11 year old skaters play passive defense only, but skaters 11 and up will begin to learn the intricacies of full contact to be sure they're ready as they move through the ranks.) Once you have passed all skill tests, you will be ready to bout with other teams! All skaters will learn the rules of the game and have opportunities to referee as well as skate in bouts and scrimmages. Advanced skaters will learn to further hone their skating and derby skills on advanced competitive teams within their age bracket.
